Just a quick note: my latest photography publication Glance, put out by Mediabus in Seoul, is now available at Printed Matter in NYC. It is also available online via their website.

It is a bit more expensive than at the Book Fair, but I was shocked how cheap they were selling it for then. It really is printed beautifully and unfortunately not available anywhere else in the US at the moment! I'm also really touched by the synopsis though I'm not sure who wrote it..

Zine Library

I love books and zines. One of the best feelings for me is having something you love in your hands. In other words: over the years I've accumulated a small collection of printed matter. I also recently spent a lot of time scanning and uploading it to my new Zine Library.

The library was inspired by a few things, but mostly I decided I wanted to have everything in one place to have with me always, no matter where I ended up in my life. Unburdening an unknown future move by taking advantage of the Internet. I'm not really a great collector so it gets a little idiosyncratic and/or personal. Most of the things in the collection were given to me by friends or acquired randomly—but I love them all. Here are a few of my favorites:

It's like I can't stop posting to my blog this week.. But! I'm really excited about being part of the first issue of SCHEMATIC Quarterly, edited and designed by Ingrid Burrington and Kimmy Fung in Baltimore.

I just got some copies in the mail and they look beautiful. The idea is that there are 4 contributors per issue on 20x30" bright white newsprint in an edition of 1000. One artist gets a full side/poster (my honor this time) and the others compose the back. Also in this issue is the work of Archival Editions, Joyce Kim, and Miranda Pfeiffer—all of it is great.

Here's another guest mom post (a gchat) I thought I'd share:

according to a study done at UT, "Dog people" tend to be more social and outgoing, whereas "cat people" tend to be more neurotic but "open," which means creative, philosophical, or nontraditional in this context.

P.S. If you can't tell I've found one last pack of polaroid film.. and UT is the University of Texas.

Though I haven't seen in it person yet, some of my drawings and collages are in the latest issue of the Japanese publication mürren—including the cover! I also feel honored that this is the "evergreen" issue:

You can see more previews of the issue on the Utrecht website here, however all the info is in Japanese.

Utrecht also has a few more copies of my book Some Thoughts for sale, which was featured in the New Museum's "Live Archive" last year and currently sold out everywhere else online.

cell phone pics 2009

I made a post like this back in June when I got my first new phone in several years. However, I've since fallen in love with the new camera and wanted to share some pics now—I don't want to just wait until it breaks.

The nicest thing about this camera is its default vertical orientation. It was a challenge at first.. and I've kind of had this theory about male and female photographers and vertical vs horizontal images for awhile. Thank you phone for opening up my field of vision!

Anyway, though—goodbye 2009!

Light Vision Coney Island Holiday

The San Francisco based Light Vision Store recently moved to Brooklyn and I was asked to shot their Holiday 2009/2010 Lookbook in Coney Island. Photos from the shoot are now online here.

Krista and the other ladies of Light Vision are awesome--and so are the clothes. I definitely felt the envy from the other people (mostly old Russian ladies) who were also brave enough to be out on the beach when we were doing the shoot!

The color of the Universe

According to NASA's Astronomy Photo of the Day (APOD), this is the average color of the universe:

This is possibly the most amazing thing I've seen/read on the Internet in a long time. I think its really beautiful because the amount of darkness that must compose the universe is so vast I cannot even comprehend it.. yet the average color of the whole is unmistakably light.

More info on how two scientists at John Hopkins (Karl Glazebrook & Ivan Baldr) calculated the color is here.

October shows

Hi! Before I'm away from my blog for awhile, I want to make a short post about some cool shows and screenings I will be a part of this month. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to any of them because I'll be away on a trip of my own--but if you are around any of the respective cities, they should be worth stopping by.

First, on the 15th I will be part of a night of screenings at Penthouse Gallery in Baltimore curated by Andrew Laumann. More info and the complete list of artists is TBA but my Usernames video will be screened.

Then on the 16th, I will be part of a huge group collage show at Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn. The title of the show is Cutters and it is curated by James Gallagher. The opening is from 7-10pm and the show will run through November 15th.

On the 17th, I am in a show that opens in Chicago at Golden Age curated by Milano Chow. I will have a drawing in a showcase of drawings and prints by the artists of Medium Rare. In addition to the artworks, books and other small editions will also be available for purchase. The show runs until November 17th.

Finally, on the 24th, I am in a group show opening in Tornoto at The Junction entitled Civilization and Its Discontents. I have a few photographs in it but the show will have all sorts of works on paper and some installation and performance, all curated by Conjunction Collective. The opening is set to run from 7pm to midnight and there will be a DJ. The works will be up until November 8th.

P.S. This may be old news, but I just got my copy of the Book of House Plants posters published by Miniature Garden last weekend at the bookfair. They are beautiful and Denise did a really great job!

New! Glance is a full-color offset tabloid zine / unbound set of posters of my photographs, published by mediabus. They came all the way from Seoul and have a table at the NY Art Book Fair which runs through the weekend here in NYC. I will be around Saturday so come by and say hello if you are around!

Glance was printed in an edition of 200, has an ISBN (my first!) and is available for a total steal at $10. Also available at the fair will be copies of my older zine of drawings, Some Thoughts, as well as my newest tumblr zine, Sensitive. More info on those can be found here.

So really, who was I kidding when I said I would blog less now that I don't have a job? Yea, that's what I thought. Lately I've just been reading and sleeping and watching movies and having the best conversations with friends. Too bad this can't last forever.

I have also been getting even more into tumblr. Above is a quick experiment in diptychs that I've been thinking about ever since I learned about tumblr's random function. If you are not familiar with this--just go to any tumblr and add "/random" and see what happens. It adds a whole new dimension to looking at images from the past..

This post is dedicated to one of my favorite people: Mary Amor. I received the above friendship bracelet in the mail Friday, along with a swan and a small card in a gold foil box.

Mary and I have known each other since I was 17 and she was 18. We met in Oakland learning how to print color photographs together at CCA. Even though after that summer I returned to Texas and she to Orange County.. life has somehow brought us together multiple times over the years in surprising places. She is living proof to me that the people who really matter in your life never disappear, now matter how time and distance may separate.

Right now she has posted on her blog, I love you always, that she is giving away FREE friendship bracelets to anyone who emails her about it. All she asks is $1 for shipping or a S.A.S.E. Sounds like a pretty great deal to me, but I already have mine! :)

Hi! This is about as personal as this blog is going to get--but a lot has been going on lately..

First, I've quit my full-time office job and I'm traveling to London and Stockholm in October. I'm leaving right after the NY Art Book Fair, which I will be attending and having a new photo zine coming out published by Mediabus (complete with my first ISBN)! More on that later..

Second, a few weeks ago my camera was stolen from some of my good friends' loft. Its been really hard and on top of that I'm traveling--so I just put up some stuff I've been making recently for sale (cheap).
